Programs and Services

  1. Physiotherapy Treatment
  2. Active Rehab Programs
  3. Vestibular Rehabilitation (Coquitlam clinic only)

Physiotherapy Treatment

  • Manual Therapy: hands-on techniques, including soft tissue mobilization, mobilization of joints, and mobilization of neural tissues. Manual therapy         may be complemented by mechanical traction, which is a decompression treatment technique for spinal injuries, such as disc herniations and sciatica.
  • Spinal Decompression/Traction: A mechanical decompression/distraction force is gently applied to our spine through a mechanical traction bed in order to relieve pressure on your nerves, discs, and joints.  Most often used for sciatica, pinched nerves, bulging or herniated discs, and degenerative disc disease to relieve back and leg pain or neck and arm pain.
  • Electrotherapy: treatment modalities to facilitate the recovery process        through pain modulation, control of swelling, reduction of muscle spasms            and re-activation of weak muscles. Modalities include ultrasound, TENS,           Interferential currents (IFC) and neuromuscular stimulators.
  • Post-Surgical Rehabilitation: treatment will focus on restoring range of motion, re-activating stabilizing musculature, and decreasing your pain with electrotherapy or other modalities.
    • Shoulder - rotator cuff repair, subacromial debridement, dislocation
    • Knee - ACL repair, meniscal repairs, total knee replacements
    • Hip - arthroscopy, total hip replacement
    • Spine - discectomies, lamenectomies, fusions
    • Wrist/Ankle - fractures, fusions, carpel tunnel release
  • Exercise-based treatment: Injury-specific exercise therapy to promote the healing process  and regain strength, mobility, balance, coordination, and cardiovascular fitness.
  • Accupuncture: therapists at our clinic offer acupuncture as a treatment option, in order to decrease pain, decrease muscle spasm, and reduce inflammation

Active Rehab Programs

  • Kinesiology sessions (1 hour): Benefit from 1-on-1 guidance with a kinesiologist to identify areas of weakness and restriction in order to ensure a speedy recovery. Ideal candidates are those who have been injured in a motor vehicle accident, individuals with low back pain, or anyone interested in maximizing their health and fitness. If your injury has kept you from work or hobby, your kinesiologist will work with you to develop a customized plan that gets you back to work or hobby in a confident and timely manner. Ask your doctor if active rehab is right for you.
  • Customized Active Rehab (CAR): this program is designed for clients with physical, psychosocial and/or medical barriers to recovery, referred by        insurance companies (such as LTD carriers and ICBC). CARs focus is on returnto work through physical and functional conditioning and education. The program   can be customized to include psychological and medical supports based on client and sponsor requirements. CARs interdisciplinary team of professionals develops a unique plan for each  client. The core team includes a physiotherapist and a kinesiologist who are supported by one or more of the following professionals: physician, occupational therapist, psychologist and vocational rehabilitation counsellors, dependent upon the clients needs.

Vestibular Rehabilitation (Vertigo and Dizziness)-Coquitlam clinic only

  • Dizziness and Vertigo account for up to 10% of all doctor visits. The source of these complaints is often difficult to identify, but can be related to head trauma (motor vehicle accidents, falls), ear infections, and age-related factors to name a few. Most commonly symptoms can include:
    • Vertigo (spinning)
    • Dizziness
    • Disequilibrium
    • Imbalance, Unsteadiness
    • Nausea
    • Tinnitus (ringing in ears)
  • The treatment for dizziness and vertigo depends on the specific diagnosis. In the case of BPPV (benign paroxysmal positional vertigo) treatment can provide complete resolution of symptoms in as little as 1 – 3 visits. In other forms of vestibular dysfunction, treatment plans involve specific exercises that stimulate rehabilitation of the vestibular system. A consistent home program is essential in these cases.

Our Team

Dave Bernard - Physiotherapist, Director (Coquitlam)

Dave completed his Physical Therapy degree at UBC in 2002. Initially his interests led him to the orthopedic, medical, and intensive care wards in the hospital setting, but in  2004 he moved into private practice full time with Back In Motion, eventually becoming  a Director in the new Coquitlam / Burnaby clinic.  He has a special interest in low back pain, hip and knee pain, vestibular rehabilitation (vertigo, dizziness), exercise   prescription for individuals with chronic conditions (diabetes), and chronic pain conditions.  Dave also has a wealth of experience working with both amateur and professional golfers to rehabilitate injuries and maximize both body and swing mechanics. If you can’t find Dave at the clinic, he’s likely off camping, jogging, or doing a very light (and quick!) workout.

Katie Foster - Physiotherapist (Coquitlam)

Katie Foster trained in physiotherapy at Cardiff University in the UK, Katie has an undergraduate degree in Sports Science and is working towards her sports physiotherapy certificate alongside completing her Masters in Manual Therapy through the University of Western Australia. Katie has many years of experience working on and off the pitch with professional and amateur athletes and was a member of the Host Medical Team for Short Track Speed Skating at the 2010 Vancouver Olympics. Katie has additional qualifications in Sports Massage and Coaching and has training in Vestibular therapy.

Bryan Cervantes - Physiotherapist (Coquitlam)

Bryan graduated with a Master of Physical Therapy degree from UBC in 2006. He     has primarily worked in private practice orthopaedics and occupational                     rehabilitation. Bryan has undergone post-graduate training in manual therapy and  is certified to practice acupuncture. He also completed a Bachelor’s of Science in      Kinesiology that led him to work in field and office ergonomics. His interests include traveling which has led him to work as a physiotherapist in Kuwait and Australia.     Besides being bitten by the traveler’s bug, Bryan loves scuba diving, is a fan of       sports and enjoys an active lifestyle.

Rachel Richards - Physiotherapist (Coquitlam)

Rachel graduated from UBC with a Masters in Physical Therapy and found her          passion  in orthopedic private practice.  She joined Back in Motion Physiotherapy in 2009 and continues to expand her skills with continued education in manual           therapy, acupuncture, and arthritis care. As a former athlete in snowboarding and  mountain bike racing, Rachel relied on physiotherapy to rehabilitate her sports        injuries for a quick return to competition.  Through these experiences she               developed an admiration for the profession and incentive to help others achieve      their goals as well. Outside of the clinic Rachel continues to mountain bike,               snowboard, hike, and generally loves the outdoors.  She also contributes to           research on fibromyalgia, volunteers for mental health initiatives, and works to       create awareness on various health care topics for the community.

Mandy Yan - Kinesiologist (Coquitlam)

Mandy graduated from SFU Kinesiology in 2004 with a Bachelor of Science degree in Kinesiology. Since graduation she has worked as a Certified Kinesiologist and      became a Rehab Assistant/Exercise Therapist specifically with ICBC, WorkSafeBC     and private 1-on-1 clients. Mandy has over six years of experience in active             rehabilitation, functional assessment, disability management, return to work            planning and job site assessment. Mandy likes to keep active through outdoor       activities including running, hiking and snowboarding.
