Physiotherapy Clinic

Not all physiotherapy clinics are the same, and at Back in Motion

we are proud to offer services in a new, state-of-the art clinic.

Our highly skilled physiotherapists will work with you to resolve

injuries or manage long term conditions. We also have an on-staff

kinesiologist who will provide one-to-one guidance with your

recommended exercise program. Located at the Burnaby-Coquitlam

border, our clinic boasts the latest in therapy and exercise equipment

and treatment techniques.

In addition to our physiotherapists, we employ a full-time kinesiologist

who works one-on-one with clients, supervising the exercise component

of their rehabilitation. By ensuring proper technique and guiding exercise progressions, this service optimizes the fitness portion of the rehabilitation

process, aiding clients in faster recoveries.

Programs and Services

  1. Acute Injury Management
  2. Customized Active Rehabilitation
  3. Fitness Training & Reconditioning

Acute Injury Management

  • Manual Therapy: hands-on techniques, including soft tissue mobilization, mobilization of joints, and mobilization of neural tissues. Manual therapy         may be complemented by mechanical traction, which is a decompression treatment technique for spinal injuries, such as disc herniations and sciatica.
  • Electrotherapy: treatment modalities to facilitate the recovery process        through pain modulation, control of swelling, reduction of muscle spasms            and targeting weak muscles. Modalities include ultrasound, TENS,           Interferential currents (IFC) and neuromuscular stimulators.
  • Exercise-based treatment: exercise therapy to promote the healing process  and regain strength, mobility, balance, coordination, and cardiovascular fitness.

Customized Active Rehabilitation

Our Customized Active Rehabilitation (CAR) program is designed for clients

with physical, psychosocial and/or medical barriers to recovery, referred by        insurance companies (such as LTD carriers and ICBC). CARs focus is on return

to work through physical and functional conditioning and education. The program can be customized to include psychological and medical supports based on client

and sponsor requirements.

CARs interdisciplinary team of professionals develops a unique plan for each         client. The core team includes a physiotherapist and a kinesiologist who are supported by one or more of the following professionals: physician, occupational therapist, psychologist and vocational rehabilitation counsellors, dependent            upon the clients needs.

Fitness Training and Reconditioning

  • Personal Training: Our kinesiologist, Nicole Tinney, has worked as a             personal trainer, assisting clients to reach their fitness goals and improve their quality of life for over two years. One-on-one or in small groups (3-4) Nicole works with clients for an hour and a half on general fitness, sport specific training, or active rehabilitation after an injury. Exercises focus on improving full-body strength and endurance, core and postural stability, flexibility and cardiovascular fitness. Nutritional advice and independent fitness routines are also available.
  • Sport Specific Rehabilitation: Our physiotherapists assist in providing          accurate diagnoses and treatment of sports injuries. Clients receive a            thorough musculoskeletal examination to review posture, range of motion, strength, and sport-specific biomechanics. A tailored intervention is provided, aimed at getting clients in top form to allow a safe and confident return to the sport they love.
  • Sport Performance Enhancement: For those clients looking to improve               their athletic performance in a range of sports, our physiotherapists provide biomechanical analyses, with recommendations and assistance for refining techniques and improving your game. If golf is your passion, teaming up with physiotherapist Dave Bernard, who has competed at the national level, is sure to do the trick. Dave works with golfers and their coaches to identify and remediate the physical source of a player's swing limitations, giving them that all important competitive edge.
  • Medical Boot Camp: This multidisciplinary program targets individuals diagnosed with or at risk for chronic illnesses such as obesity, diabetes,  heart disease or stroke. With the approval of the client's physician, our team of practitioners (physician, physiotherapist, kinesiologist and nutritionist) provide a thorough assessment and devise a tailored health and fitness plan. With just 2 to 3 visits a week, clients can turn their health around. Measures such as VO2 max, girth, body mass index, and resting heart rate are routinely taken to monitor progress and provide the client's family physician with updated reports. An emphasis is placed on health and wellness education so the client's new lifestyle can be maintained after completing the program.

Physiotherapists

Dave Bernard - Director of Physiotherapy Services (Coquitlam)

Dave Bernard finds physiotherapy to be a great mix of challenge and reward,

and has recently taken a special interest in vestibular rehabilitation. He also

works with golfers, both amateur and professional, to help fine tune the

mechanics of the body and swing.

After graduating from the University of Victoria with an Honours degree in

1993, Dave pursued a career playing golf. He competed at the provincial and national levels, and proudly represented the Vancouver and Fraser Valley

teams at the provincial championships on 3 occasions.

Dave completed his Physiotherapy degree at UBC in 2002. Initially his interests

led him to the medical and intensive care wards at Langley Memorial Hospital,

and he joined Back in Motion Rehab in 2004.

His spare time is spent with his wife and son, and he enjoys jogging, reading,

and summer camping trips with his extended family.

Katie Foster - Physiotherapist (Coquitlam)

Katie Foster recently joined the Back in Motion team; working in the Coquitlam Physiotherapy Clinic as well as in the Occupational Rehab programs. Katie came

to Canada from Britain in 2006. She received her Physiotherapy training at

Cardiff, one of Wales' leading universities. Since her arrival in Canada she has completed another degree in sports and exercise sciences, and became qualified

in sports massage.

Katie has worked as a physiotherapist for a variety of sports teams, both professional and amateur. She also has experience in coaching and training athletes. Katie loves the variety of work environments that Back in Motion

offers, and is enjoying being a part of the team.
