Corporate Social Responsibility Initiatives

BiM’s Commitment to Social Responsibility and Environmental Sustainability

In 2005, Back in Motion initiated the Corporate Activity to promote the Respect of the Environment and Society (CARES) Committee. The Committee is sub-divided into (1) Environmental Responsibility and (2) Social Responsibility. Our top priorities are to enhance our involvement with local communities as well as work to reduce any negative impact our business practices have on the environment. CARES focuses on the environmental, social, and economic impacts of Back in Motion's services and practices.

Environmental Sustainability

Earth Day Celebration (April 20, 2007)
On April 20, BiM staff in Richmond enjoyed a delicious organic pancake breakfast while staff in Surrey met for a nature walk around the office neighbourhood. We even saw llamas on a nearby farm! In the afternoon, we held a Dirty Sock contest in the parking lot. Participants had to place a white sock over the exhaust pipes of their cars and allowed the cars to run idle for 1 minute. The person with the dirtiest sock, Lei, won a $40 voucher towards her next oil change.

After the contest, staff members met for a healthy snack where they got a chance to try a variety of organic foods. At the end of the day, BiM also handed out reusable tote bags that can be used for groceries.

Past Initiatives:

  • Requested building managers to provide recycling containers
  • Installed bike racks at the Richmond office
  • Provided instructions to staff for printing 2 pages per sheet of paper and encouraged staff members to use the print preview option before printing
  • Emailed staff members instructions for double-sided printing
  • Began using re-usable inter-office envelopes to transfer mail between offices
  • Posted signs in kitchens that provide information on containers that can be recycled
  • Implemented electronic pay stubs to reduce paper consumption
  • Began using fair trade coffee
  • Encouraged staff to turn on the energy saver feature when office equipment is not in use
